Pure mathematics is mathematics motivated entirely for reasons other than application. It is distinguished by its rigour, abstraction and beauty. The 18th century onwards, this was a recognized category of mathematical activity, sometimes characterized as speculative mathematics, and at variance with the trend towards meeting the needs of navigation, astronomy and physics, engineering and so on.

The department of Pure Mathematics has a relatively long record of academic activities. It started its activity in 1966 with only 47 undergraduate students. However, thanks to the improvement of the facilities and increase in the number of academic staff members of the department, three new departments of "Applied Mathematics" (1996), "Statistics" (1998) and "Computer Science" (1999) have been developed the department of Pure Mathematics during the last thirty years.

The department offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and currently there are 145 B.Sc., 57 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students involved in studying and research .

The main research interests of the departments are Commutative Algebra, Lie Algebra, Group theory (Finite, Infinite Abelian, Representation and Presentation), Analysis (Operator theory, Functional Analysis, Fram and Functional Equation), Geometry and Mathematical Logic.
